TheBusiness Development Manager – Collector Vehicles is responsible for the expansion and growth of our Classics business in the Midwest region. Berkley One Classics specializes in providing insurance solutions to insureds who own and cherish classic and collectible vehicles of all sorts.
This is an opportunity for someone who would like to delve into the collector car industry. You may not have direct experience in this space, but if you are working in the personal lines insurance sales industry and have an interest/hobby in cars...this could be a great opportunity for you!
You will be responsible for working with both existing and newly appointed agencies and managing a key group of appointed agencies, identifying opportunities, strategically building relationships and ultimately increasing our pipeline. Additionally, you will help to expand our distribution by identifying, prospecting and appointing new agents. All this while being part of a dynamic and enthusiastic group which includes our sales, underwriting, marketing, risk management and claims teams.
This position will be based in our Chicago, IL office. We offer a hybrid work schedule with 3 days in the office; and 2 days remote.
Key functions include but are not limited to:
- Execute agency management strategies, including commensurate tactics and activities, in order to meet or exceed growth and profit targets by state and by agent/broker. Appointed monoline agencies are in 25+ states, but initial focus will be on the mid-west territory.
- Identify and appoint new agent/broker partners who will positively contribute to the growth of Berkley One Classics. Manage non-performing agents up or out.
- Contribute to the build of alternate distribution strategies and innovation experiments.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders including Marketing, Underwriting, Sales, Product and Claims to exceed new business targets, provide market insights, build new products and capabilities.
- Lead agency business planning, including new business, retention, hit ratio, profit, efficiency and other targets.
- Execute activities and projects relative to business development, lead generation, networking and events, campaign management and brand building.
- Actively engage in existing marketing & sponsorship activation and management efforts.
- Travel throughout the assigned territory is required and will account for at least 50% of your time.
The E&S Underwriting Manager (AVP or VP) will be the first leader of Berkley One E&S! You will play an integral role in developing our E&S Underwriting practice. This role will lead the underwriting team in areas including new business production, renewal retention and broker relationship development. You will also be responsible for building and managing the agency plant as we scale our E&S capabilities, weigh in on state and product expansion, and ensure we are conducting our underwriting practices in compliance with all regulations.
This position can be based in our Morristown, NJ office. We offer a hybrid work schedule with 3 days in the office; and 2 days remote where it makes sense to do so.
Key functions include but are not limited to:
- Build and develop Berkley One's E&S Underwriting practice and portfolio:
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to deploy Berkley One’s E&S Underwriting capability
- Use previous experience to determine risk acceptability, pricing, coverage, terms and conditions with a goal of growing a profitable portfolio
- Review and approve new business, endorsements and renewals that fall within underwriting authority and company guidelines. Refer risks that fall outside authority or guidelines
- Develop, analyze and evaluate information and exposures for complex risks
- Interface with Enterprise Risk Management, Actuarial and other business functions to actively manage all exposures
- Measure and optimize portfolio progress by reviewing and analyzing underwriting data and monitoring industry best practices to identify opportunities for continuous improvement
- Broker partnerships:
- Develop, maintain and manage broker relationships based on trust, the value of your expertise, and your reputation
- Work with producers to solicit, underwrite and price new and renewal surplus lines personal property and casualty business
- Implement annual goals and strategies for brokers and regularly track progress to plan
- Use your knowledge and expertise to craft the best solutions for broker customers
- Lead and manage E&S Underwriting team:
- Coach and guide staff to ensure they are following underwriting guidelines, adhering to authority and provide high quality customer service
- Engage team in building strong and successful agency relationships
- Engage in all talent management activities including performance, goal setting, compensation and other activities
- Develop team’s technical and sales skills via account referrals, answering questions and serving as a technical resource to your team
- Ensure team members are fully trained on current guidelines, workflows, and procedures
The Risk Selection Underwriting Trainee will review interesting accounts of sophisticated customers including beautiful, high value homes; luxury cars; and collections of all types such as art, wine and jewelry. This position is a great stepping stone to other positions within the industry. You will learn underwriting practices by participating in formal, on-the-job training which will lead towards a working knowledge of high net worth personal lines product language; underwriting practices, policies and guidelines; risk selection; customer relationship development and cultivation; and sales competency.
Key functions include but are not limited to:
Industry Knowledge:
- Develop broad knowledge of the insurance business, marketplace, company goals, objectives and metrics
- Demonstrate broad understanding of company operations, strategies, financials and competitive advantages
Product and Service:
- Demonstrate forms and coverage knowledge and apply them to exposures
- Compare company coverage to competitors and identify competitive differences and position them effectively
- Articulate company service capabilities and position to meet specific customer needs
Book Management and Pricing:
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of rate, growth and profit objectives and takes this into consideration when making underwriting decisions and pre-qualifying risks
- Perform detailed analysis utilizing appropriate information to determine account acceptability and which takes customer needs into consideration
- Apply underwriting knowledge and risk information make sound decisions on pricing, terms and conditions
Sales and Customer Management:
- Identify customer needs and objectives and position products accordingly
- Negotiate coverage, terms, conditions, and pricing
- Develop successful relationships with customers and potential customers

The IT Development Manager will partner with the Chief Information Officer of Berkley One to define and execute the strategic technical vision and roadmap. You will provide 'hands-on' leadership having close interaction with key stakeholders, external partners, third party vendors, and other members of the Berkley One delivery team.
This position can be based in our Morristown, NJ or New York, NY (Manhattan) offices. We offer a hybrid work schedule with 3 days in the office; and 2 days remote where it makes sense to do so.
Key functions include but are not limited to:
- Function as the 'go-to' technical leader for the software applications supported, requiring depth and breadth of knowledge in technologies, applications, integration, interfaces and business domain
- Implement new tools and communication vehicles to keep teams informed and to optimize the SDLC process and improve quality; identify bottlenecks and quality issues and propose solutions
- Work closely with stakeholders to design and document automation solutions that align with the business needs and also consistent with the architectural vision
- Partner with Project and QA Managers to develop and maintain delivery plans; work closely with BA’s, development team, QA, and design leads using Agile methodology; manage development resource capacity and execution
- Mentor team members (including Sourcing Partners) to enforce development guidelines and best practices
- Perform hands on development work through Insurance Now configuration tools, Java, JQuery, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, SQL
