This CommercialSurety Underwriting Trainee is an entry level position that allows recent college graduates or individuals with limited professional experience to participate in a Surety specific training program. Under the supervision of an Underwriting Officer or Manager training will consist of a combination of reading assignments and on-the-job training. The first stage of training will provide a general overview of surety as well as basic financial analysis. The next stage will focus on learning how to underwrite (analyze and assess) the operational and financial strength of companies from a wide range of industries as well as the fundamentals of commercial surety underwriting. By the end of the program, the individual will be able to make preliminary recommendations on specific bond requests as well as new account submissions and renewal lines of credit.  Initial training will be completed in Morristown, NJ beginning in June.  Following successful completion of the program the trainee will be transitioned into a position within our NJ filed office.   *Individuals interested in this opportunity MUST be able to reside in New Jersey.   Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: - Complete reading and study assignments on surety and financial statement analysis. - Perform basic analysis of financial statements and supporting schedules. - Sign-up for and complete the AFSB program; passing the parts 151 and 152 within the first year of hire. AFSB 153 should then be completed within six months of first anniversary. - Review analysis with direct manager. - Assist in data entry and maintains financial underwriting files according to company guidelines. - Conduct initial evaluation of bond forms and contract documents in an effort to assess risk. - Communicate findings and recommendations to direct manager in a thoughtful and logical manner. - Develop the ability to communicate effectively on technical topics in both written and oral format, establish a working rapport with Field and Home Office personnel, exhibit good listening skills and the capacity to gain knowledge and expertise with additional experience and further training.

The Surety Associate Underwriter services and underwrites new and renewal bond business from assigned accounts in the primary line of business. S/he interacts and collaborates with a team of Line of Business colleagues and other critical internal/external business associates. Position involves inside business development and support of new and active accounts.  Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:  - Underwrites, evaluates, assesses, and manages assigned accounts in a particular line or lines of business with direct oversight from his/her manager or supervisor. Submits timely detailed submission memos to Home Office (with management review) for credit approval. Handles day to day underwriting of bonds and issues related to assigned accounts. - Understands risk and how it applies in the underwriting of accounts and interaction with both performance (contract) and non-performance (commercial) bonds. - Understands and executes personal and branch objectives and strategies in an effort to produce budgeted results. - Understands and supports the mission and objectives of BSG in account meetings with confidence, clear communication, good listening skills, professionalism, and empathy with the goal to be a trusted adviser and valued partner to all parties. - Maintains and manages workflow, including effective communications, with agency representatives with assigned accounts meeting all company standards and expectations. May communicate acceptance or rejection of new and existing accounts while working towards establishing and enhancing the BSG brand. - Accountable for accurate underwriting documentation/information in account management systems and adherence to documentation standards and ensures accuracy and integrity of all information contained in account files, and keeps them up to date. - Keeps management apprised of account related issues importance to the Branch and to the Company. - Manages all non-underwriting aspects of his / her accounts and agency relations, including but not limited to accounts receivable.
