The Senior Property Claims Representative is responsible for the quality handling and resolution of a wide variety of commercial property claims in a timely and professional manner with emphasis on providing quality service while controlling expenses. This position routinely handles claims involving coverage issues, significant damages and other claims that require specialized handling. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Reviews new losses and appropriately manages claims through coverage analysis, investigation, damages evaluation, reserving and resolution on commercial property claims, including some litigated property claims.
- Provides excellent customer service to meet the needs of the insured, agent and all other internal and external customers.
- Evaluates property estimates and bills for accuracy and applicability to coverage relating to the type of claims submitted.
- Directs independent adjusters on inspection assignments to assure timeliness and quality in the claim handling process.
- Assures expenses are reasonable.
- Establishes timely and accurate claim and expense reserves and maintains proper reserving throughout the life of a claim.
- Negotiates and conveys claim settlements within authority limits.
- Participates in regional round table meetings as needed.
- Writes Reservation of Rights and Coverage Denial letters and other complex correspondence.
- Maintains an effective dairy system and document claim file activities in accordance with established procedures.
- Manages file inventory to ensure timely resolution of cases.
- Handles files in compliance with state regulations.
- Investigates claims for potential fraud and works with designated SIU (Special Investigation Unit) personnel.
Provides loss control consultative support and serrvices to our branches, agents, and policyholders. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Provides high quality, cost effective service to our customers which consistently meets or exceeds their expectations and assists them in minimizing their losses.
- Serves as Technical consultant to underwriters in risk selection and renewal decisions
- Provides timely, professional reports and consultative support to our underwriters and other functions, as may be needed to assist in superior risk selection, pricing and retention of profitable business.
- Assist in the development of innovative, distinctive and cost effective service methods and tools to identify and quantify risk and reduce losses.
- Helps maintain targeted loss control files as required by statutory requirements.
- Researches and compiles technical document information as needed to provide consultative services to our customers.
- Distributes loss control technical bulletins as directed by Home Office Loss Control Management.
To rate and issue renewals, new business, endorsements, and cancellations using the automated facilities of the BIS system and other local software programs. Customer Service contact with the agents to develop information needed to process work, solve problems, and maintain good agency relations. Assist the Lead Underwriting Associate with training and quality assurance within the service area.
- Rate and issue more complex quotes, new business, renewals and endorsements through the BIS systems and other local software programs.
- Obtains and reviews pertinent information needed to evaluate new business and renewals, as requested, according to prescribed criteria and authority.
- Review, analyze, and process requests received from agents as directed. Takes necessary action when requesting additional information needed to price, process, and produce business. Follow up with the appropriate internal and external customers.
- Maintain quality and time standards as established.
- Provide timely, courteous and efficient service to all internal and external customers. Communicates in a timely and positive manner. Written and oral communication should be clear, concise and well organized.
- Document files with the appropriate underwriting/rating information to assure activity, analysis and risk evaluation is clear, concise and completed, as directed.
- Assist the Commercial Lines Underwriter in those areas as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Interaction with Underwriting Assistants and Underwriters occurs daily. Individual will be expected to have a pleasant demeanor and present themselves in a professional manner at all times.

The Senior Commercial Lines Underwriter evaluates (selection and pricing) and maintains (control) risk acceptability and profitability within the company’s underwriting guidelines and procedures for commercial risks. S/he partners with agents to manage a challenging and/or complex book of commercial business or agency relationships. Demonstrates complex decision-making with little or no supervision, recommending quality exceptions where appropriate to maximize profitability and meet business plans. Supports marketing activities to agents and actively participates in the agency management process. Serves as a mentor providing technical support, training, and problem solving for other underwriters. Responsible for working with and protecting confidential and proprietary customer and Company information. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Analyzes commercial lines accounts to make decisions based on individual risk characteristics, exposure analysis, hazard recognition and control.
- Utilizes underwriting guidelines to ensure compliance with state regulations. Within delegated authority levels, accepts, rejects or modifies new and/or renewal business to ensure a profitable book of business.
- Prices business according to Company underwriting and pricing guidelines. Assists less experienced underwriters in the handling of high hazard or more complex accounts.
- Partners with Territory Managers to support marketing activities by developing ongoing relationships with agents to discuss market appetite, quality and profitability of submissions, service standards, and underwriting and/or product changes.
- Communicates with agents on underwriting issues including decisions on cancellations, declinations, exposure concerns, and survey results.
- Partners with Territory Managers to identify issues or patterns and works to resolve or improve them; participates in agency planning and review processes; and may identify sales and marketing opportunities. Takes a lead role relative to Key Account review and recommendations.
- Travels, with or without Territory Manager, to assigned agent locations to develop agency partnerships.
- Trains and educates agency staff on Company products, services, processes, and underwriting philosophy.
- Assists in training and serves as a technical resource to other underwriters as needed.
- Attend industry workshops/meetings each year.
