The Chief Underwriting Officer provides strategic direction and leadership for the Underwriting functions at BTU. This executive leader will oversee underwriting profitability and leading/developing the underwriting department for success. This includes executive level business planning, developing team members, forecasting, industry risk selection, and guidance in insurance industry affairs in all states. - Provide high-level leadership, expertise and guidance in underwriting and insurance matters. - Participate in the overall leadership and management of the Company as a member of the Senior Executive Team, including strategic, operational, and budget planning. - Responsible for overall leadership and management of the underwriting staff in accordance with the Company’s policies and all applicable laws and regulations. - Daily management of the underwriting department to ensure the effective solicitation, selection, pricing, and retention of profitable business. - Implement underwriting strategies to meet market needs, including new underwriting programs, procedures, and products. - Assign underwriting authority to staff and establish and maintain controls to monitor their ability to accept risks, determine pricing and coverages, and place reinsurance. - Establish and maintain underwriting audit processes and controls to verify compliance with underwriting authorities, established guidelines, standards, and procedures. - Oversee underwriting of difficult, complex accounts and resolve issues beyond the authority of underwriting staff. - Collaborate with other departments regarding regulatory issues, accounting, processing, marketing, or other company issues. - Lead the assessment and implementation of ongoing process improvements in the underwriting department as technologies and business models evolve. - Develop and manage relationships with sister companies, W. R. Berkley, reinsurers, and vendors. - Identify employees for promotional opportunities and create development plans to prepare them for their next step within the organization. - Resolve performance issues consistent with company policy. As a Technology Underwriter, you’ll be responsible for the management and growth of an assigned book of business as well as the acquisition of new business with a focus on Technology Middle Market insurance customers. We will rely on you to analyze customers’ business information and claims history, monitor clients’ activities to change the policies as risks evolve. You’ll evaluate acceptability of individual risks and determine overall acceptability of risk, coverage terms and pricing to achieve company profit objectives. You’ll work with agents/brokers to develop productive and profitable relationships while also ensuring compliance with company underwriting guidelines and insurance regulators. - Responsible for profitable results via risk selection, maintaining high premium retention ratios and applying appropriate rating and coverage terms - Account manager for assigned book of business - Handle new and renewal submissions and endorsement requests from agents/ producers - Document underwriting files to support analysis, coverage terms and pricing - Operate according to underwriting authority as delegated by manager - Provides clear instruction and guidance to underwriting support staff and operations staff - Desire to develop sales and marketing skills and strategies in order to meet financial goals - Follow established pricing, underwriting and documentation protocol as set forth by underwriting management - Mentor & coach underwriting support staff   May perform other functions as assigned

Serve as the strategic, operational, and motivational leader of Underwriting in support of delivering profitable growth and providing excellent community, employee, and customer relations.   Product Management Leadership - Management and oversight of the Technology E&O and Cyber line of business. This includes managing and ensuring financial initiatives are met on an annual basis.  Those initiatives include profit, premium retention, growth and rate for the Technology E&O and Cyber line of business. - Work with CUO on developing and maintaining proprietary coverage forms and endorsements and work closely with legal, claims and regulatory staff to ensure program needs are met. - Create and update applications to ensure proper selection and pricing. - Work with Actuarial to manage and monitor overall pricing practices and rate targets. - Development and execution of marketing materials. - Establish and manage underwriting guidelines and procedures. - Recommend underwriting authority to CUO and monitor compliance. - Continually work with legal, actuarial, and claims to maintain familiarity with current issues and trends that impact our business. - Work with CUO, President and Corporate Reinsurance on treaty reinsurance coverage placement and adequacy. - Keep abreast of competitor products and create internal product comparisons for our underwriting team. Underwriting Management - Provide leadership and direction on business opportunities, pricing, retention analysis, loss control needs, and account stewardship. - Identify product experts within each territory to mentor on an ongoing basis. - Conduct audits for quality control and conduct training where needed. - Establish key metrics, which are to be monitored, managed and reported monthly. - Coordinate sales and marketing efforts with field underwriting leadership. - Conduct SOX testing and documentation. - Manage vendor relationships with Moxfive, Netdiligence and Bitsight. Training and Education - Create training materials to present both internally and externally. - Provide internal and external training and education to our underwriting team members and producers on our products and capabilities. - Provide ongoing education to our underwriting team relating to professional and cyber industry exposures. Additional Marketing-Related Functions - Visit and develop rapport with producer partners, as appropriate. - Provide product presentations in person or via web call as appropriate.   May perform other functions as assigned
