Responsible for the handling, oversight and overall management of complex professional liability claims, primarily Medical Malpractice.  Experience with Employment Practices Liability (EPL) claims a plus. Recognized as a technical expert in the interpretation of complex or unusual claims-made policy coverages. Under limited management direction, will analyze, coordinate and resolve claims within assigned limits of broad authority.   In addition, the successful candidate may work directly with less senior claim handlers, providing mentoring and coaching support on claims, evaluating requests for monetary authority, providing guidance and direct oversight on more severe claims, assisting with trial and large loss reporting, and handling day-to-day claims questions.   - Manages highly complex investigations of professional liability claims including coverage issues, liability, compensability and damages. Determines if a major claim should be settled or litigated and implements an appropriate resolution strategy accordingly. Effectively manages loss costs and claim expenses. - Manages all types of investigative activity or litigation on major claims, including the posting of appropriate reserves in a timely manner. Coordinates discovery and litigation strategy with  panel attorneys and/or counsel retained by the insured. - Negotiates highly complex settlement packages, and authorizes payment within scope of authority, settling claims in the most cost effective manner and ensuring timely issuance of disbursements. - Makes recommendations on claims processes and resolution strategies to management. - Analyzes claim activities; prepares and presents reports to management and other internal business partners and clients. - Works with attorneys, account representatives, agents, and insureds regarding the handling and/or disposition of highly complex claims. - Provides guidance and assistance to less experienced claims staff and other functional areas. - Interaction and consultation with business partners including underwriting, agents and management regarding industry activity and trends. - Coordinate payment of attorney/vendor claim expenses and fees in a timely manner.

This position is part of the D&O underwriting segment for Berkley Select and supports the achievement of established departmental goals related to profitability, growth, and producer relations.  Evaluate risk characteristics to determine potential business opportunities in accordance with guidelines and philosophy. Develop and maintain assigned brokerage relationships.   Broker Management - Manage key and/or target broker relationships and expectations. - Manage the expectations of, and communicate underwriting decisions, requirements, and philosophies to brokerage community. - Maintain producer / agency contact log in electronic databases. - Quarterly travel required (when permitted by WR Berkley) Underwriting Duties - Assist in distributing business opportunities to underwriting team members to achieve efficient and effective underwriting (based on work flow, ability and priority). - Provide final approval and guidance on risk analysis presented by members of the underwriting department in accordance with authority levels. - Evaluate risk characteristics of submissions to determine business opportunities in accordance with guidelines and company philosophy. - Price, design and recommend policy format for quoted submissions. - Review underwriting documents for accuracy prior to their release to brokers and/or company clients. - Discuss, analyze and interpret Berkley Select policy forms and coverage issues. The Underwriting Segment Executive maintains a book of business of their own while leading a team of segment underwriters. The Executive is responsible for the development and execution of the underwriting strategy, working with the segment underwriters to effectively and efficiently meet the needs of our producers and insureds and achieve our financial targets.   This role is critical to the overall success of the Business Segment and provides day-to-day direction to underwriters pursuant to the segment strategy. The Executive will work closely with the marketing department to establish, maintain and strengthen broker relationships, and will work with the actuarial department to evaluate relevant data, and make evidence based decisions. The Executive will work collaboratively across the organization with Claims, IT and Finance to optimize segment performance.   - Evaluates or assesses the business applying for insurance by qualifying accounts; identifying, selecting and assessing risks; determining the premium, policy terms and conditions; obtaining approvals; creating/presenting the proposal to the agent/broker and successfully negotiating deals.  Handles underwriter questions and referrals. - Demonstrates a high level of responsiveness and focus on supporting Brokers objectives through successful negotiations. Develops and maintains the relationship through responsive service, site visits, in person renewal meetings or enhanced knowledge of their customers’ businesses. - Manages a sizable and complex book of business by analyzing the portfolio, identifying areas of opportunity for improved growth, profit and diversification, and executing marketing plans to increase market share with preferred brokers. - Development and maintenance of rating plans, forms and endorsements for admitted business. The ability to craft coverage terms and pricing for non-admitted business. Monitors social, judicial and legislative developments that may impact the profitability of the segment. - Documents files in a way that reflects a solid thought process and decision making through comprehensive account reviews, sign-offs and referrals. - Formally guides, mentors, and coaches underwriters in both technical and professional skills. Demonstrates an area of expertise and provides regular updates to other underwriters. - Actively participates in continuous improvement by fully engaging in daily huddles (coaching sessions), generating suggestions, following appropriate procedures and work principles, participating in problem solving activities, and using continuous improvement tools to support the work of the team. - Lead and participate in interviewing, hiring and training of underwriting personnel  - In conjunction with CUO, conduct employee evaluations and recommend salary and incentive compensation changes on an annual basis and at time of promotion.  Identify performance issues and take appropriate actions. - Delegate and monitor work assignments - Set realistic expectations and then inspire and motivate the team to maximize performance
