Responsibilities

The Role:
The Senior Catastrophe Modeling Analyst will be part of a team that has expertise in natural hazards, catastrophe risk, and insurance risk modeling.
The position will provide support to our High Net Worth homeowners business (Berkley One), while also working as part of the corporate ERM team on broader projects.

 

The primary functions of the role include:

 

Berkley One (Personal Lines) key responsibilities


• Produce monthly portfolio modeling report for Berkley One, and share insights with Berkley One senior management.
• Produce modeled CAT analysis to be used in Property pricing, portfolio optimization and aggregation management which would include running scenario impact analyses with B1 product and actuarial teams, assessing impact of possible rate, deductible, or guideline changes.
• Produce pre-bind analysis for large property new business submissions.
• Work with Berkley One Analytics to ensure accurate reporting of data for modeling.
• Work with the actuarial team to develop appropriate CAT loads for rate reviews.
• Work with Claims and Actuarial teams to develop estimates of the ultimate CAT losses post events.
• Review and understand the impact of historical or probable CAT events on Berkley One’s book of business.
• Perform comparison studies on Berkley One’s CAT performance relative to peers following CAT events.

 

Other ERM key responsibilities


• Responsible for various quarterly catastrophe modeling and aggregation reports for W.R. Berkley Corporation and subsidiaries.
• Responsible for property exposure visualization/mapping for the group.
• Develop and implement improved catastrophe reporting processes.
• Assisting in the completion of rating agency and regulatory returns.
• Become an active participant in catastrophe management team by sharing knowledge, expertise, and information within the W.R. Berkley Organization.

Qualifications

This challenging and rewarding role involves a high level of interaction with our operating companies, providing catastrophe modeling and analysis through the entire modeling cycle.

 

Technical Skills Required
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in STEMA or other relevant degree
• 5 or more years catastrophe modeling experience
• Beginner SQL skills required; Intermediate to Advanced SQL skills preferred.
• Skilled in Microsoft Excel; VBA programming experience preferred
• Python and/or Power BI a plus
• Adept at analyzing and reporting off of large relational databases
• Strong mathematical and statistical skills
• Advanced working knowledge of catastrophe modeling techniques; strong RMS Risklink knowledge preferred.

• Enthusiastic, proactive and inquiring personality
• Strong organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple assignments, work well with minimal supervision, and meet deadlines
• Strong verbal and written communication skills – must be able to express cat modeling concepts in a way that can be understood by a wide range of insurance and reinsurance practitioners
• Interested in participating in a range of projects, some of which will not be “traditional” cat modeling in nature
