In this corporate underwriting role, you will serve as an advisor, influencer, and resource for Berkley companies writing Professional Liability and Casualty coverages across multiple classes of business. You will help shape strategy, monitor performance, and drive innovation across underwriting practices, pricing, guidelines, and tools. You’ll also lead initiatives that combine technical expertise and data analytics to improve efficiency and long-term results.

 

Leadership & Strategy
• Lead professional liability communities (e.g., E&O, D&O, EPLI) to foster education, idea sharing, and innovation.
• Review and influence business unit strategies, risk appetite, forms, pricing, and underwriting tools.
• Recommend and drive changes to support risk-adjusted return goals.
Technical Expertise
• Lead periodic “state of the line” studies in collaboration with corporate actuaries.
• Monitor emerging exposures and coordinate with Corporate Legal and Claims to adjust coverage or exclusions.
• Support similar initiatives across the casualty portfolio.
Data & Analytics
• Transform data into actionable insights.
• Lead initiatives to improve data quality, management information, and analytics.
• Develop and enhance metrics and reporting tools.
Collaboration & Communication
• Facilitate communication among CUOs and product experts via working groups and meetings.
• Maintain a database of internal expertise across the organization.
• Partner with key stakeholders across underwriting, operations, actuarial, claims, IT, compliance, and more.
Partnering
• Partner and coordinate primarily with Chief Underwriting Officers, though also with Segment Heads, Operating Unit Presidents and various Corporate, Segment and Operating Unit functions (Underwriting, Operations, Product Development, Berkley Global Underwriters, Actuarial, Ceded Reinsurance, Claims, Enterprise Risk Management, Enterprise Product Support Services, IT, Data and Analytics, Compliance, Marketing and Project Management).

 

Location and Travel:
This is a full-time, in-office position located at any W.R. Berkley office in the U.S. Travel is required (estimated 20–30%), depending on project needs.

Qualifications

Education & Experience Requirements:


• Relevant degree from an accredited college or university.
• Minimum of 10 years professional liability (e.g. E&O, Professional, D&O, Management Liability, Tech, EPL, Fiduciary, Cyber, Med Mal, etc.) Underwriting experience in the insurance/reinsurance industry including in the field and in home office environments, Admitted and E&S business, Primary and Excess business, across various industry segments in domestic.
• Minimum of five years of casualty underwriting experience in the insurance/reinsurance industry across various markets and industries is preferred.
• Substantial knowledge of underwriting practices, procedures, and tools; rating; pricing; portfolio and risk analysis; policy drafting.
• Track record of influencing and generating profitable business
• International Experience is a plus.
