Responsibilities

The Vice President is the lieutenant to Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) and is a senior executive responsible for the underwriting strategy of the Company. Reporting to the CUO, and working with both Field and Staff functional areas, the lieutenant designs, implements, and monitors the underwriting activities for all of the Company’s customer segments: Construction, Manufacturing, Specialty Construction and Professional Services and Small Business. This role is critical and provides the day-to-day direction and support to the Segment leaders and underwriting groups.

  • New Product Development and product lifecycle maintenance:
  • Develop and implement best practices
  • Vetting new-product ideas from both internal and external sources
  • Underwriting appetite, guidelines, forms, forms usage, terms and conditions, training, and communications
  • Underwriting Liaison with IT, Operations, Actuary, Finance, Marketing and Claims
  • Implementation, performance monitoring and feedback loop
  • Creation and maintenance of Underwriting Guidelines for all customer segments
  • Quality and Compliance, governance, including peer reviews, monthly management reviews, coordination of WRBC reviews, and development and implementation of automation support for the underwriting audit process
  • Training –Continuous assessing of staff and needs. Will design and implement underwriting training programs to ensure that field underwriting staff perform at the highest skill levels as well as trainees brought in.
  • Support Vela’s Field Management Team with their risk-selection strategies at both product-line and territorial levels
  • Underwriting Analysis of the Programs (Books) and overall underwriting portfolio - Monitor and analyze underwriting performance and results for desired underwriting outcomes. Makes recommendations to improved bottom line profitability.
  • Regulatory Issues - support, and coordinate with, Finance and Operations
  • Develop and/or strengthen interdepartmental relationships with Claims, Actuarial, Finance, Marketing, IT, WRBC
  • Monitor and communicate emerging underwriting Issues that are relevant to Vela's current and future planned strategies, programs and processes.
  • Work with WRBC and E&S Segment sister companies on the Guidewire Policy Center transition.
  • Must be fully vaccinated and remain fully vaccinated against COVID-19*, unless prohibited by law

Qualifications

  • Four (4) year College Degree, or commensurate experience and training
  • Minimum 10+ years’ experience in commercial insurance
  • Must have previous leadership experience
  • Advanced-level knowledge of insurance products/coverage, market segments and marketplace
  • Advanced-level knowledge of underwriting, pricing, risk selection, territory management.
  • Ability to apply underwriting/appetite, tools, systems, and resources to achieve goal and solve complex problems
  • CPCU, AIM, CRIS, ASLI and other professional designations preferred
