We are currently seeking a Commercial Lines Underwriter Trainee which is a developmental position. The selected candidate will learn the fundamental principles of underwriting commercial lines insurance. This individual will gain an understanding of the underwriting thought process and learn to utilize underwriting guidelines, procedures, rating manual rules and insurance laws/regulations.  The Trainee will participate in a training program involving classroom instruction and self-study combined with on-the-job shadowing that will provide the opportunity to learn the business.


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college
  • (Note: Relevant, progressively responsible work experience may be substituted on a year for year basis)
  • Basic knowledge of underwriting and the insurance industry theories and practices
  • This position will be assessed based on achievement of the following elements of performance: Attainment of goals/standards for this position; Dependability (Appropriate use of time and resources, including but not limited to phone use, attendance, promptness, funds or asset use; Customer service/sensitivity (of internal and external customers); Teamwork.  Other additional elements of performance will impact this position and include key skills and other core competencies:
