    Responsibilities

    Manages team of Rating Technicians and Underwriting Assistants to support the company’s business plan goals of profitability, managed growth, and enhanced competitive advantage.  Ensures professional and prompt underwriting service is provided to underwriters and other operating units as required.  Ensures policy workflow is prioritized and adhere to set internal service line agreements.   Accountable for quality control of their direct reports. 

     

    • Recruits, mentors and supervises staff of Underwriting Assistants and Rating Techicians.  Responds to questions from staff relating to procedures and systems.  Provides frequent and specific constructive feedback to staff.  Utilizes team meetings to share information and solicit input from staff.  Directs the functions related to the processing and servicing of commercial new business, renewals, endorsements, cancellations, audits, non-renewals, requests and quotes.  Will work within designated letter of authority.    
    • Serves as liaison to the Business Application units providing feedback and testing support as needed.  Communicates directly with Berkley Agribusiness Staff Underwriting Leadership team or Berkley Technology Services (BTS) regarding policy processing system issues.  Collaborates with BTS staff on system changes to identify and resolve problems.  Serves as a resource to Underwriting on questions related to the processing of specific policies and coverage’s.
    • Analyzes workflow and recommends workflow modifications to management to improve operating efficiency and reduce productivity costs. Ensures quality and quantity of work are consistent and within established department performance standards, e.g., performing file audits, reviewing production reports, etc.  Performs as system lead for underwriting audit application, maintaining direct contact to third party vendor.  Duties include auditing of underwriting files in addition to processing quality assurance reviews.
    • Trains and develops new and existing Underwriting Assistants and Rating Analysts.  Trains staff on implemented processing system enhancements, policies and procedures and monitors for effectiveness.  Accountable for system enhancements, workflow and training documentation.   
    • Assists and participates in monthly Staff Underwriting meetings.   Responsible for delivering relevant topical information to educate the underwriting department on best practices and procedures on workflow items.   
    • Completes special projects and other duties as assigned by management.

    Directly supervises Underwriting Assistants and Rating Technicians.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

    Qualifications

    Education & Experience

    Bachelor's degree with a minimum of three years property and casualty underwriting experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Solid knowledge of commercial insurance forms and coverages.  Prior supervisor experience preferred.

    Licenses/Certifications/Designations

    Completion of or working toward AU, CPCU or similar designation, strongly preferred.  Valid driver’s license for travel.
