Responsibilities

Senior Underwriter, Excess Casualty

The Senior Underwriter is responsible for managing and growing an Excess Casualty book of business, driving profitability, underwriting excellence, and broker relationships. This role evaluates new and renewal business, determines risk acceptability, develops pricing strategies, and provides technical underwriting expertise. The position serves as a key partner to brokers, supports business development initiatives, and helps resolve service and coverage issues.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite and manage a profitable Excess Casualty portfolio.
  • Evaluate submissions, renewals, pricing, endorsements, restrictions, and cancellations.
  • Analyze risks, assess rate adequacy, and identify exposure trends.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with wholesale brokers and distribution partners.
  • Develop and implement underwriting strategies to achieve growth and profitability goals.
  • Provide technical guidance on coverage, pricing, regulatory matters, and emerging risks.
  • Collaborate with claims, underwriting, and other internal teams to improve portfolio performance.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and referral resource for complex underwriting decisions.
  • Mentor and train less experienced underwriters.
  • Support product development and coverage enhancements to address market needs.

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience (Risk Management preferred).
  • Minimum 5 years of Excess Casualty underwriting experience.
  • Strong background in Excess & Surplus (E&S) Lines and Wholesale Brokerage distribution.
  • Professional designations such as CPCU, ASLI, or AU preferred.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent analytical, negotiation, relationship-building, and communication skills.
