The Executive Underwriter evaluates, selects, prices, and maintains commercially underwritten risks within delegated authority levels to ensure risk acceptability and profitability. This role partners closely with agents and Territory Managers to manage complex books of business, supports marketing activities, and serves as a technical mentor and resource to other underwriters.
Key functions include but are not limited to the following:
• Analyze commercial lines accounts based on individual risk characteristics, exposure analysis, hazard recognition, and control.
• Apply underwriting guidelines to ensure compliance with state regulations.
• Accept, reject, or modify new and renewal business within delegated authority levels to maintain a profitable book of business.
• Price business in accordance with company underwriting and pricing guidelines.
• Assist less experienced underwriters with high hazard or more complex accounts.
• Use creativity and underwriting knowledge to write risks and retain desirable business.
• Partner with Territory Managers to support marketing activities and develop ongoing relationships with agents.
• Discuss market appetite, submission quality and profitability, service standards, and underwriting or product changes with agents.
• Communicate underwriting decisions on cancellations, declinations, exposure concerns, and survey results to agents.
• Partner with Territory Managers to identify agency or book-level issues or patterns and drive resolutions or improvements.
• Participate in agency planning and review processes.
• Identify sales and marketing opportunities as appropriate.
• Take a lead role in Key Account review and recommendations.
• Travel, with or without Territory Managers, to assigned agent locations to develop and strengthen agency partnerships.
• Train and educate agency staff on company products, services, processes, and underwriting philosophy.
• Assist in training and serve as a technical resource to other underwriters as needed.
• Attend industry workshops and meetings each year.
• Work with and protect confidential and proprietary customer and company information.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Minimum of 10+ years commercial lines underwriting experience, including but not limited to CGL, Property, Packages, BOP, Auto, Crime, IM, Umbrella and/or WC.
• Comprehensive knowledge of commercial lines products and contracts, including regulatory and policy differences among applicable states.
• Good organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and effectively prioritize.
• Demonstrated depth in negotiation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong computer skills and ability to work with multi-faceted systems.
• Ability to effectively and independently manage a complex workload while exhibiting very sound judgment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with agents and other departments.
• Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
• Proficiency in commercial lines underwriting, risk evaluation and selection, risk pricing, profitability management, exposure analysis, and hazard recognition and control.
• Experience in agency relationship management, marketing support, and training and mentoring.
• CPCU designation or other equivalent coursework preferred.
Education Requirement
• Four-year college degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
