Responsibilities

The Senior Underwriter – General Casualty is responsible for managing an individual book of business and contributing to revenue growth, profitability, and competitiveness. This role oversees underwriting activities including applications, renewals, repricing, restrictions, and cancellations, serves as a technical expert, and partners closely with assigned brokers to drive growth and resolve service issues. Recognized as a technical expert that has both technical and administrative responsibility. May be involved in planning and implementing administrative, technical and operational direction toward achieving defined goals and objectives. Focus is maintained on their assigned brokers to foster growth, understanding of our business, marketing of our appetite and initiatives as well as the key point person for resolution of service issues.

 

  • Maintain contributory responsibility for General Casualty underwriting results, including revenue growth and profitability, for an individual book of business.
  • Demonstrate broad knowledge of commercial insurance products, including Habitational and Hospitality General Liability.
  • Apply underwriting expertise to support profitable growth, pricing strategies, and risk assessment across assigned territories or portfolios.
  • Evaluate complex risks, coverage needs, emerging hazards, regulatory requirements, and market opportunities to deliver customer-focused solutions.
  • Serve as a technical resource for coverage and pricing guidance within established authority levels.
  • Develop and recommend product enhancements, underwriting policies, and operational improvements that align with business strategy and customer needs.
  • Collaborate with brokers, agents, claims partners, and internal stakeholders to address trends, resolve issues, and identify growth opportunities.
  • Build strong relationships and influence customers and broker partners through advanced negotiation and sales skills.
  • Analyze underwriting, pricing, and claims data to identify exposures, assess rate adequacy, and develop effective risk management strategies.
  • Collaborate with underwriting staff by providing training, technical guidance, and professional development support.
  • Foster knowledge sharing, leverage internal and external resources, and promote innovative solutions and technological advancements.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment managing multiple complex assignments and competing priorities.
  • Comfortable working in an ambiguous and dynamic environment.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ general casualty underwriting experience.
  • Strong experience in Excess & Surplus Lines and Wholesale Brokerage Distribution.
  • Experience writing primary commercial general liability (required).
  • Professional designations such as CPCU, RPLU, ASLI, AU or other related designations (preferred)

Education Requirement

  • Four (4) year college degree, or commensurate experience and training (Risk Management preferred).
