Berkley Specialty Excess (BSE) was founded in 2023 as a member company of W.R. Berkley Corporation. Berkley Specialty Excess is an excess and surplus lines commercial insurance carrier. Berkley Specialty Excess provides excess and surplus lines coverages for mid-market companies with hard to place, specialized risks including environmental (excess and primary), excess energy, and excess general casualty. These risks involve moderate to high degrees of hazard and require highly negotiated terms to meet buyer’s needs. The distribution of products is limited to industry specialized brokers, wholesale for all products, and large retail brokers for environmental and energy products.

The Summer Intern, Operations will train with key team members to learn and participate in the process of servicing of new and renewal underwriting accounts for the development and retention of Berkley Specialty Excess business. This internship requires strong analytical skills applied in learning all aspects of the evaluation and pricing in accordance with service standards, objectives, and Berkley Specialty Excess underwriting guidelines. Other duties and tasks will be assigned in conjunction with the overall internship experience over the course of approximately 10 weeks.
• Service Berkley Specialty Excess new and renewal business in accordance with service standards, objectives, and Admiral underwriting guidelines
• Work independently in a remote or hybrid-based in-person schedule throughout the summer months
• Perform ad-hoc financial analysis as needed to support business partners
• Complete additional duties as assigned
Qualifications:
• Interest in enhancing classroom learning through practical career-related work experience within the industry
• Career interest in Underwriting and Excess and Surplus Lines
• Ability to assess priorities and manage deadlines effectively
• Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
• Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational skills
• Strong research and analytical skills
• Proficiency with MS Office Suite
Education Requirement
• Pursuit of a bachelor’s degree with a focus in Risk Management and Insurance or other applicable major preferred
• Rising Junior or Senior preferred
• GPA of 3.0 and above required
