Responsibilities

The Director, Renewal Underwriting will be a direct report of the AVP, Underwriting Data and Analytics and is a key member of the Aspire leadership team.  The Director will be responsible for managing all aspects of the renewal process at Berkley Aspire.  They will solve key business problems across the renewal space to drive enhanced and efficient underwriting processes and decisions to produce superior results. 

  • Leads and develops the Renewal Management team, providing direction, coaching, and performance oversight for leaders and individual contributors
  • Oversees and executes the full end‑to‑end renewal lifecycle each month from initial policy review through final disposition, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with strategic, operational, and regulatory expectations
  • Oversees tracking of expiring policies to ensure renewal targets are met and all state regulatory requirements are consistently achieved
  • Prepares and delivers monthly and quarterly corporate reports, including pricing analyses and largest‑limits summaries for Corporate
  • Conducts advanced quantitative analysis of actuarial, financial, and utilization data to inform renewal decisions and portfolio performance
  • Drives enterprise‑level initiatives that shape and execute the renewal strategy for Berkley Aspire
  • Ensures the renewal organization maintains full compliance with state‑specific regulations and internal audit standards
  • Participates in claims roundtables as needed and acts on key findings to support policy‑level and portfolio profitability based on the trends identified in those discussions.
  • Designs and optimizes systems, workflows, and processes that support effective management of the renewal book and team operations
  • Builds and maintains strong agency relationships to resolve renewal challenges and support long‑term business retention
  • Leads and collaborates on the design, development, and implementation of business, technical, and modernization initiatives that strengthen the underwriting portfolio and advance strategic and tactical portfolio‑management capabilities
  • Identifies emerging market trends and produces insights that guide portfolio strategy, including defining performance indicators, segmentation models, and key profitability drivers
  • Promotes a culture of knowledge sharing and best‑practice adoption across the organization, particularly in the use of data and analytics
  • Demonstrates exceptional accuracy, attention to detail, communication skills, and interpersonal effectiveness while consistently meeting deadlines
  • Communicates analytical findings, strategic insights, and performance results to teams, cross‑functional partners, and senior leadership
  • Supports and participates in training, development, and skill‑building initiatives across the department
  • Oversees staff selection, onboarding, development, retention, and succession planning for the renewal organization
  • Represents the department on committees, project teams, and industry boards as assigned

Qualifications

 

  • College degree is preferred; candidates with equivalent professional experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum of 10 years of Property & Casualty insurance industry experience preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of management and leadership experience desired
  • Proven leadership capabilities with a track record of developing high‑performing teams Surplus lines experience preferred
  • Strong business, financial, and operational acumen
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to influence, persuade, and present complex information clearly
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain effective internal and external relationships
  • Strong decision‑making skills with the ability to think strategically and execute effectively
  • Comprehensive knowledge of insurance principles, rates, rules, forms, procedures, regulations, coverages, and core business processes
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex business or administrative challenges, assess alternatives, and recommend sound solutions
  • Advanced proficiency in building, maintaining, and interpreting ad hoc and standard reporting
  • Ability to interpret model outputs and recommend appropriate adjustments
  • Strong understanding of data applications, tools, and emerging trends
  • Skilled in developing clear, compelling, and actionable data visualizations
  • Proven ability to unite teams, foster collaboration, and drive innovative problem‑solving for improved efficiency and effectiveness

Additional Requirements
