Responsibilities

The Claims Litigation Director - Professional Liability is responsible for delivering the highest level of specialized technical claims expertise for complex, high‑exposure professional liability matters within an excess and surplus lines environment. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience managing Professional Liability claims, particularly those involving EPL, Legal Malpractice, Real Estate, Title and Property Managers. 

 

The role demands strong strategic and analytical thinking, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with cross‑functional partners—including defense counsel and coverage counsel.  Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated through prompt, clear, and professional interactions, are essential for success in this position.

  • Conduct thorough analyses of liability and damages associated with claims asserted against insureds, ensuring all evaluations are accurately documented.
  • Review and interpret insurance coverage issues and prepare clear, well‑reasoned coverage position letters.
  • Retain, direct, and oversee outside defense counsel to ensure effective and strategic claim resolution.
  • Evaluate a full portfolio of pending matters, establishing and maintaining appropriate and supportable reserves.
  • Build, strengthen, and maintain productive relationships with insureds, brokers, and outside counsel to support effective claim management and communication.
  • Partner with underwriting by providing claims‑based insights and risk assessments to support evaluation of specific accounts.
  • Prepare and deliver timely Large Loss Reports and other detailed reporting materials in accordance with internal requirements.
  • Manage and monitor caseload activity, leveraging available tools and resources to ensure timely progression and high‑quality outcomes.
  • Maintain consistent, professional engagement with insureds, brokers, and external partners to promote collaboration and transparency.
  • Offer underwriting teams actionable claim intelligence, trends, and exposure insights to support informed decision‑making.
  • Offer timely and comprehensive support to the AVP as business needs arise
  • Roundtable cases going to Mediation, Trial and Arbitration

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree is preferred (or equivalent insurance claims work experience).
  • Minimum 10 years of experience handling Professional Liability Claims.  Commercial General Liability experience a plus. 
  • Full knowledge of insurance contracts, investigation techniques, legal requirements and insurance regulation.
  • An aptitude for evaluating, analyzing, and interpreting contracts and other complex information.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have intermediate knowledge of computer programs in a Windows environment, including Word, Excel and E-mail.
  • Current adjuster licenses in one or more states preferred but must be willing to obtain additional state licensures.
  • Willingness to embrace a digital culture that includes accessing email and other platforms on a personal device.
  • Proven track record of early identification of claim value and resolution strategy.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills.
  • Must be a “difference maker” and a self-starter who owns claims outcomes.
  • Embraces the use of AI tools.
