Responsibilities

We have an exciting opportunity for an Associate Underwriter to join our VA Team!  As an Associate Underwriter, you will obtain and evaluate information needed to underwrite and price new business, renewals and service endorsements on individual policies within your delegated level of authority.  This role works with an underwriting team and our agency partners and offers the opportunity to learn and grow within commercial underwriting.  You will work on assignments requiring basic underwriting technical knowledge.

 

  • Utilize company guidelines and procedures to complete assignments while referring business outside individual limit of authority
  • Demonstrate basic property/casualty knowledge of the four major lines of business - Property   General Liability, Automobile, Worker’s Compensation – to evaluate and process renewals, new business and endorsement transactions within assigned authority including corresponding with agency partners to obtain information as needed
  • Examine new business applications submitted through our electronic system, Berkley Link, to determine if risk meets established eligibility guidelines
  • Evaluate renewals within authority level, by reviewing updated account information, claims experience, risk acceptability and pricing.  Within authority, determine if account will be renewed or cancelled, and follow up with necessary action to carry out decision
  • Evaluate and complete endorsements within authority level by obtaining necessary information from the agent and utilizing underwriting resources to make informed decisions, and by providing transaction processing instructions to the policy services team
  • Route underwriting concerns beyond assigned authority level to underwriter
  • Review underwriting alerts from the Audit Department and consult with our agency partners to address properly
  • Review incoming correspondence to determine and carry out appropriate procedural action
  • Order and review reports as requested, including MVRs, Experience Mods, Experian
  • Complete assigned new business and renewals in accordance with Berkley Advantage time service expectations – includes managing new business pipeline and ensuring all assigned renewals are booked prior to month’s closing
  • Participate and successfully complete all internal company training as requested
  • Collaborate with team members and consult agency partners for additional information when necessary
  • Determine price in accordance with established underwriting guidelines, understanding and appropriately utilizing pricing factors for small business accounts within delegated authority
  • Provide timely, courteous and efficient service to all internal and external customers
  • Develop and maintain professional, productive working relationships with agency partners to encourage growth, profitability and support company appetite.
  • Comply with company documentation standards with appropriate information to ensure analysis and risk evaluation is clear, concise and completed as directed
  • Maintain quality & production standards as established
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required; college degree or equivalent military experience preferred
  • 3 or more years of experience in property & casualty insurance
  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrate attention to detail along with ability to research
  • Must demonstrate strong decision-making skills
  • Strong desk management skills, ability to multitask, independently organize work and prioritize competing demands and requests to complete tasks within required time constraints
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities
  • Willingness to be innovative and share creative ideas with their team
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient PC, analytical and critical thinking skills; proficient in MS Excel
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • High sense of urgency and need to identify and resolve issues
  • Keen interest in learning and being coached
