Responsibilities

The Underwriting Assistant – Lawyers Professional Liability plays a key role within the Professional Liability underwriting segment at Berkley Select, supporting departmental goals related to profitability, growth, and broker relationships.

 

This position provides essential operational and administrative support for the Lawyers Professional product line, ensuring the timely and accurate processing of policies, endorsements, submissions, and client correspondence for both new and renewal accounts.

 

Responsibilities include:

 

Broker Management

  • Communicate underwriting decisions, requirements, and philosophies to the brokerage community.
  • Facilitate information exchange during the solicitation process, ensuring clarity and responsiveness.

Underwriting Support

  • Prepare and process insurance applications, endorsements, and policy documents.
  • Conduct preliminary risk assessments and research to assist underwriters in evaluating submissions.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records of underwriting activities in internal systems.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to inquiries from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., operations, finance, claims) to resolve policy-related issues and enhance the customer experience.
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations and internal underwriting guidelines.
  • Monitor and coordinate policy renewals in partnership with underwriters and agents.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Provide certified copies of policy documents to claims handlers as needed.
  • Review underwriting documents for accuracy prior to release to brokers or clients.
  • Interpret and explain Berkley Select policy forms and coverage details.

 

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or related insurance experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective interaction with team members and brokers.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills and the ability to manage tasks independently.
  • Familiarity with insurance terminology and basic underwriting principles (preferred).
  • Customer service orientation with a detail-focused and organized approach.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database management systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work professionally with diverse groups.
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills with a focus on accuracy.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.

The position is based in Chicago; in-office four days per week.

Base Salary Range: $55,000 - 62,000.

The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. This role is eligible to participate in the annual discretionary bonus program.
