Responsibilities

We are seeking a strategic, results-driven Underwriting Director – Large Accounts to lead our Large Accounts portfolio across key industries: franchise restaurants, collision/auto repair, quick lube, and fitness studios/gyms. Join us as a catalyst for change, leveraging data, insight, and leadership to redefine how Large Accounts underwriting delivers profitability, precision, and client value.

 

As a team leader and trusted advisor to the Executive Team, you will shape underwriting strategy, manage a team of experienced underwriters, and collaborate directly with our internal sales and service teams to deliver exceptional solutions while maintaining combined ratio discipline and portfolio profitability.

 

Key functions include but are not limited to:

 

Leadership & Strategy:

  • Define and execute underwriting strategy for Large Accounts, ensuring alignment with company growth and profitability goals.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and thought leader on large account underwriting, pricing, and risk selection.
  • Drive a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the underwriting team.

Portfolio Management:

  • Oversee underwriting decisions for complex and high-value accounts, ensuring adherence to guidelines and appetite.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, identify emerging loss trends, and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Partner with actuarial and product teams to refine pricing models and coverage offerings.

Team Development:

  • Recruit, coach, and develop underwriters to build a high-performing team with strong technical and analytical skills.
  • Provide actionable feedback and training to enhance underwriting judgment and referral quality.
  • Foster career growth and succession planning within the team.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Partner closely with Sales, Service, and Actuarial teams to develop and execute strategies for acquiring and retaining large accounts.
  • Work with Claims to share insights, improve loss outcomes, and enhance underwriting guidelines.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Technology to streamline processes, leverage data, and improve efficiency.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor within the organization, ensuring alignment between underwriting strategy and company objectives.

Operational Excellence:

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal controls.
  • Leverage technology and data analytics to improve underwriting efficiency and decision-making.
  • Drive process consistency and uphold service commitments to deliver a seamless experience for internal partners and clients.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Insurance related designation (AU, ARM and/or CPCU), preferred.
  • 10 + years of commercial P&C underwriting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven expertise in Mid-Market or Large Accounts underwriting across multiple lines (Property, GL, Auto, WC, Umbrella).
  • Background using data analysis to guide underwriting philosophy and decisions
  • Candidate will possess excellent communication (verbal/written), organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-starting, self-motivating and capable of making decisions independently.
  • Limited travel required-less than 10%
  • Occasional evening and weekend work required to meet deadlines.
