Responsibilities

The Associate Underwriter will be responsible for commercial underwriting and also assist the policy services team.  Based on a level of authority granted by underwriting management, an associate underwriter will perform a full range of policy underwriting functions related to excess liability insurance, including but not limited to, accepting or declining risks, analyzing underwriting information, loss analysis, determining appropriate coverage levels and terms for accepting risks and performing a variety of broker liaison/account servicing functions.  This position will focus on the Gemini Express segment and provide underwriting support to a select group of senior underwriters working on Tradition Vehicular business.  This position will be assigned underwriting files.  The Associate Underwriter will handle business of moderate volume or complexity.

 

Key functions include but are not limited to:

 

  • Review new and renewal commercial insurance risks and determine accurate classification of business, policy contract forms and pricing of risk; review and act upon pertinent risk information such as, safer and check fleet reports, vehicle and driver lists, loss runs and financial statements. 
  • Review and analyze request/application to determine acceptability under current company guidelines and policies, seeking additional information from brokers as needed;
  • Enter underwriting data into BOS documenting analysis, correctly classifying exposures, entering all aggregated loss data and large losses, analyzing driver data and questioning any inconsistencies between application and exposure data. 
  • Begin to cultivate effective agency relationships through exemplary customer service and underwriting; most of this will be via phone, but the AU will accompany underwriters on agency visits, (s) when appropriate.  Attendance at client meetings and conferences may also be required if underwriting feels it is beneficial.
  • With oversight from UW, make the decision to quote or decline and decide appropriate pricing given the risk characteristics.

 

  • Notify broker of/explain reasons for decisions to decline; give broker quotes;
  • Process policy endorsements: review for completeness of information and acceptability of risk; obtain additional information if needed; process for rating and issuance.
  • Process cancellations and non-renewals at expiration dates:
  • Review brokers’ requests for cancellation to verify compliance with legal requirements, cancellation date, etc.;
  • Process mid-term cancellations, at broker or company initiative, for non-payment, increase in hazard, or other allowable reasons, ensuring that all legal requirements are met, and work with the manager to obtain permission within regulatory guidelines if necessary.
  • Seek assistance from manager or senior staff regarding any aspects of underwriting a policy that are questionable or deviate significantly from standard precedents and/or company operating policies/procedures.  Obtain approval of all larger and unusual acceptable risks.
  • Keep abreast of relevant changes in legal requirements, industry standards and trends, company policies and guidelines, and so forth.
  • Work with senior underwriting staff and take formal courses/training to acquire more advanced knowledge and skills required to become fully proficient in underwriting
  • Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • 3+ years or related P&C experience
