This role will be based in our Morristown, NJ office.  We offer a hybrid work schedule with 4 days in the office; and 1 day remote where it makes sense to do so.

Responsibilities

As a Berkley One Underwriting Trainee, you'll participate in a structured training program combining formal instruction and hands-on experience. This program builds foundational knowledge in high-net-worth personal lines, including product language, underwriting principles, risk assessment, customer relationship management, and sales proficiency.  You'll gain:  

 

Industry Knowledge

  • Gain a broad understanding of the insurance industry, market dynamics, and company objectives.
  • Develop insight into company operations, strategies, financials, and competitive positioning.

Product & Service Expertise

  • Learn and apply knowledge of policy forms and coverage to assess exposures.
  • Compare company offerings with competitors to identify and communicate differentiators.
  • Effectively present company services tailored to client needs.

Book Management & Pricing

  • Understand basic pricing, growth, and profitability goals in underwriting decisions.
  • Analyze risk data to determine account eligibility while considering client needs.
  • Make informed decisions on pricing, terms, and conditions within authority limits.
  • Align underwriting decisions with business line and customer segmentation strategies.
  • Refer accounts beyond authority and consistently meet service standards.

Sales & Customer Relationship Management

  • Identify client needs and align product offerings accordingly.
  • Negotiate coverage, pricing, and terms.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with current and prospective clients.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Preference for insurance, risk management, and actuary majors.
  • Exposure to P&C insurance through an internship or first job preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with a positive, professional demeanor.
  • Detail-oriented, proactive, and able to thrive in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across all organizational levels and with customers.
