Responsibilities

The Data Science Intern position is designed for students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related fields. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a professional data science environment, providing exposure to various aspects of full-stack data science, including data management, advanced modeling, analytics, visualization, and communication of insights.

 

As a Data Science Intern, you will work with large datasets and utilize machine learning and AI tools to uncover actionable business insights. In addition to developing core data science skills, you will gain knowledge in IT systems, project management methodologies, the software development lifecycle, and the insurance industry. The Advanced Analytics department focuses on developing automated and modern AI systems to integrate with core business processes.

Key functions include but are not limited to:

Data Management

  • Ensure the accuracy and secure delivery of data and reports in a timely manner.
  • Identify, research, analyze, and document data errors for effective correction.
  • Utilize data to address assigned business challenges, providing written, graphical, and verbal summaries of analyses.
  • Integrate disparate datasets from various internal and external sources to extract meaningful insights.
  • Fulfill the data needs of internal and external stakeholders by delivering reports and electronic files as required.
  • Participate in code reviews and validate code results through thorough analysis of data outputs.

 

Professional Exposure

  • Engage in a professional environment, interacting and networking with staff and leadership.
  • Observe and contribute to all stages of the model and application development lifecycle, including planning, requirements gathering, development, and testing.
  • Develop a foundational understanding of information technology, particularly in relation to data, data warehousing, ETL processes, and data mining.
  • Gain insight into project management practices and methodologies, including both waterfall and Agile approaches.

 

Technical Tools

  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft technologies such as SQL Server, Power BI, and the Office Suite.
  • Utilize other applications effectively, including VS Code, Python, GitHub, Jira, and Confluence.
  • Exposure to Cloud and Generative AI tools and solutions

Qualifications

  • Applications should be working toward an undergraduate or master’s degree with a focus in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related fields.
  • Clearly demonstrates and models WR Berkley and Midwest innovation behaviors.
  • Highly self-motivated and self-directed.
  • Passion for working with data to solve problems.
  • Proficiency with Excel; experience with database querying a plus.
  • Proficiency with a programming language; python is preferred
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to communicate data insights verbally and visually.
  • Proficiency in offering and actively engaging with constructive feedback.

This is a year-round internship based in a hybrid in-office setting at our Chesterfield location.
