Responsibilities

The League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust (LMCIT) is a governmental risk pool served by Berkley Risk Administrators Co., LLC. This role primarily supports LMCIT business, managing an underwriting territory with complex, high-value municipal accounts. Key responsibilities include premium calculation, risk evaluation, policy issuance, and collaboration with members and agents.

 

For the first two years, a special focus will be on electric utility property risks. The role requires close coordination with a consulting team to assess and mitigate risks, ensure appropriate pricing, and apply strategic underwriting measures, such as deductibles or exclusions, where necessary

 

  • Underwriting & Risk Management – Oversee a complex portfolio of municipal accounts, managing new and renewal business (general liability, property casualty, workers’ compensation) in alignment with LMCIT guidelines.
  • Member & Agent Relations – Serve as a key point of contact for agents and members, assisting with coverage inquiries, endorsements, and risk management strategies.
  • Strategic Initiatives – Work closely with the Underwriting Manager and LMCIT leadership on program development, pricing models, and portfolio risk analysis.
  • Decision-Making & Problem-Solving – Utilize critical thinking and technical expertise to navigate complex underwriting decisions with minimal oversight.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration – Build and maintain strong relationships with account contacts, agents, reinsurers, and risk control consultants, particularly in the electric utility sector during the initial two years.
  • Special Projects & Program Oversight – Lead projects related to coverage development, pricing strategies, and risk mitigation, with an emphasis on municipal electric utility risks.

May perform other functions as assigned.

Qualifications

Core Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in underwriting or risk control.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of governmental risk pools and public entity risk management.
  • Strong technical expertise in insurance design, evaluation, and analysis or risk control program development for municipal risks.
  • Proven ability to develop and manage strategic work plans effectively.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Minnesota laws and practices affecting local government operations.
  • Professional designations such as CPCU or other industry credentials.
  • Experience or familiarity with municipal electric utility risks (including generation and distribution facilities).

Education 

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, insurance, finance or related field.

• Base Salary Range: $70k -123k
