Responsibilities

The Vice President, Underwriting and Business Development is a key strategic leader responsible for driving Berkley Luxury Group’s growth through underwriting excellence and innovative distribution strategies. This role leads all underwriting activities as well as the development and execution of a comprehensive distribution strategy aligned with the company’s multi-state and multi-product expansion goals.

 

This role can be located on a hybrid schedule in our new Parsippany NJ office or remotely in other metropolitan areas across the US.

 

This individual will oversee the end-to-end underwriting process, emphasizing operational excellence, technical rigor, and the development of team capabilities—particularly in sales and negotiation. A central focus is on establishing and strengthening the Berkley Luxury Group brand in emerging markets through active engagement, presence, and risk management leadership.

 

The VP will collaborate closely with Product, Underwriting, Actuarial, and Claims teams to ensure cohesive planning, marketing, and execution that maximizes shareholder value and delivers strong risk-adjusted returns.

 

As a senior leader, this role will influence and guide distribution partners by crafting and executing sales strategies that drive profitable growth, retention, and new business. Additional responsibilities include identifying new distribution opportunities, making strategic agency appointments, and serving as a brand ambassador to support the company’s expansion efforts.

 

Reporting directly to the President and working alongside the Senior Leadership Team, the VP will help shape and execute the company’s vision of becoming a premier national P&C insurance provider. This includes building strong partnerships with top-tier brokers and delivering a full suite of specialized products, advanced technology solutions, and field-based, customer-facing services—all in pursuit of profitable growth.

 

Underwriting Leadership & Execution: Drive underwriting excellence by managing the performance, development, and work activities of underwriting staff in new territories.  In partnership with the CUO, lead the implementation of underwriting training, guidelines, and best practices in new goegraphies. Identify emerging underwriting trends and implement mitigation strategies as needed.

Strategic Leadership & Vision:   Serve as a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, helping to define and execute the long-term vision of Berkley Luxury Group (BLG) as an innovative, customer-focused, and profitable organization.

Market Expansion & Distribution Strategy:  Develop and execute a comprehensive distribution strategy to support profitable multi-state and multi-product growth. Analyze market trends, competitive intelligence, and performance data to identify opportunities for territorial expansion and agency development.

Agency Management & Sales Enablement:  Design and oversee structured agency appointment and onboarding processes to ensure high-quality representation. Implement performance metrics, compensation models, and CRM tools to drive accountability, transparency, and alignment with BLG’s strategic goals.

Business Development & Relationship Management:  Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with distribution partners. Identify and pursue new distribution opportunities that support state and product expansion. Act as a brand ambassador and lead producer council engagement.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:  Foster a culture of collaboration across Underwriting, Claims, Product, and Actuarial teams to ensure cohesive execution.

Marketing & Brand Development: Lead the development of marketing strategies and materials—including brochures, proposals, and stewardship reports—to support brand awareness and expansion. Ensure tools, training, and resources are in place to support agency success and reinforce BLG’s market position.

Sales Culture & Staff Development: Champion a sales-driven culture across all departments, emphasizing continuous improvement, accountability, and customer focus. Provide coaching and mentorship to underwriting staff in agency management, marketing, and sales effectiveness.

Customer & Market Insights: Capture and synthesize the “Voice of the Customer” through research, engagement, and feedback. Establish and monitor satisfaction metrics (e.g., NPS, OSAT) to inform strategy and enhance service delivery.

Qualifications

  • 10 + years of P & C Underwriting experience with expertise in commercial property and casualty preferred
  • 5-10 years of Business Development experience in an insurance environment.
  • Exhibits a track record for finding innovative ways to bring teams together to problem-solve for greatest efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Well-versed in presentations, accustomed to addressing agents, vendors, and partners. Ability to influence and persuade through advanced written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.

The company offers a competitive compensation plan and robust benefits package for full time regular employees which for this role includes:

Base Salary Range: $150,000 - $290,000

The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.

Eligible to participate in the annual discretionary bonus program.
