Responsibilities

The Head of Segment Data and Advanced Analytics reports to Heath Kidd, Segment Leader, and supports the Alternative Market Segment operating units (OUs) and their respective leadership teams. This officer level role is a champion for segment data, advanced analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI) supporting business strategy and objectives.  Key functions include but are not limited to:

 

Drive vision, strategy, communication, and execution in a federated operating model

  • Strategy: Work with leadership and others to develop and maintain data and analytics strategy for the segment including the deployment of artificial intelligence capabilities within the segment.
  • Alignment: Work with segment business and technical teams to develop a consistent data and analytics strategy across OUs, within each OU, ensuring alignment with the Berkley DNA team.
  • Partner: Provide open and ongoing partnership across all levels of the segment and OUs to guide and support data and analytical efforts and the related systems including leading and overseeing the budget for the segment data and analytics organization.
  • Staffing: Assist in guiding and partnering with the staff at the segment OUs to provide the best segment outcome. Assess strategic need over time, then as needed optimize staffing with a cost-effective data and analytics organization of potentially 3-5 personnel.  These personnel will have analytics and AI expertise that efficiently supplement the segment OU staffing models.
  • Communication: Guide the communication strategy for data and analytics within the segment.
  • Change Management: Provide formal and informal change management leadership, (i.e. communication, buy-in, understanding, status, decisions, process, etc.) to effectively operationalize data and analytics use within the segment OUs. This includes advanced analytics and AI adoption.
  • Advanced Analytics: Oversee the identification, recommendation, development, deployment and implementation of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and related systems supporting segment strategic objectives enabling trusted data-driven decision making. Also, the use of AI to streamline operations and processes and improve efficiency.
  • AI Governance: Ensure AI governance compliance for the segment and all operating units.
  • Data Governance: Oversee development, deployment, and maintenance of segment data governance processes. Partner appropriately with segment OUs to ensure this is seamless.
  • Development and Production Support: Responsible for the development and the ongoing maintenance of segment data repositories, data pipelines, business intelligence, ad-hoc analytics, and advanced analytics supporting a federated operating model.
  • Metrics: Provide regular reporting and metrics on the status of the data strategy program to the EVP and segment leadership.

Ensure execution alignment, development, maintenance, and governance leadership:

  • Project Alignment: Partner with Presidents and others to ensure continuity across multiple and individual projects supporting the segment data and analytics strategy.
  • Leadership: Set and communicate project specific vision and strategy and provide project level direction, decisions, etc. as needed.
  • Delivery: Ensure major milestones are documented, specifications are met, understood and managed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or technology, or related field required.  JD, MBA and/or CPU preferred.
  • Minimum fifteen (15) years of progressive experience in the insurance/financial services industry with a focus on data management, analytics, and artificial intelligence with at least five years in a senior leadership role.
  • In-depth understanding of data management and policies, strategies and standards, along with significant understanding of data analytics and data governance practices.
  • Data analytics expertise in the commercial property and casualty insurance Industry
  • Significant skill in understanding data management concepts, technology, and best practices
  • Deep understanding of machine learning and artificial intelligence development and deployment at scale
  • Significant skill in technology, data, and analytics processes for large scale operations
  • Organization Change Management and Agile Project Management knowledge.
  • Firm understanding of emerging data, analytics, and artificial intelligence technology trends A combination of strong business, financial acumen, and technical experience.
  • Demonstrated success at managing and leading change in a complex, collaborative organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to align data and technology solutions to complex business needs in balance with broader organizational interests. 
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Acts with a sense of urgency and a disciplined, outcome-based approach to getting things done
  • Has a track record for finding innovative ways to bring teams together to problem-solve for greatest efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Agile and decisive; can work in an ambiguous environment.
  • Strong interpersonal relationships, collaboration and communication skills, including well-versed in and accustomed to working across all levels of an organization, executives, managers, individual contributors.
  • Ability to influence and persuade through advanced written and verbal communication skills in a cross-functional matrix environment.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to travel locally and regionally up to 40% of the time.
