Responsibilities

The Executive Underwriter is primarily responsible for risk evaluation including selection and retention of new and existing business in accordance with the company’s underwriting philosophy.  The Executive Underwriter develops and fosters positive, professional relationships with the company’s agency partners, as well as achieves company growth and profitability objectives.  The Executive Underwriter is a leader and team player. The Executive Underwriter is expected to exhibit a high level of technical expertise, while providing leadership and mentoring to other underwriters. This employee will be expected to be highly productive, supporting company goals and advancing company values. This employee should exercise sound judgment and deliver consistent results.

 

Key functions include but are not limited to:

  • Drives selection of new business and renewal evaluations in alignment with company underwriting philosophy, authority parameters, and established procedures.
  • Indirectly leads our team of Production Underwriters, providing coaching, mentoring, and training. Reviews and approves account referrals from junior underwriters to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Builds strong agency relationships through professionalism, responsiveness, and integrity. Resolves policy audit issues promptly and conducts field underwriting and quoting as needed.
  • Provides accurate and thorough education to agents about the company’s risk selection philosophy and pricing guidelines.
  • Monitors and analyzes performance metrics (premium, unit count, mix of business, written-to-quoted ratio, declination ratio) to drive territory success.
  • Achieves company growth objectives by recognizing sales opportunities, soliciting desirable business, and diligent follow-up on quoted business.
  • Evaluates claims activity and loss control reports, adjusting underwriting decisions and recommending guideline enhancements as needed.
  • Determines the appropriate course of action for policy changes, delegating to underwriting and/or processing assistants for handling.
  • Takes on leadership from an underwriting perspective of the core and middle market predictive models. Collaborate with actuarial to ensure that consistent feedback is provided to ensure models are tuned and accurate. 
  • Oversees QA processes for core/middle market underwriters to maintain consistency and excellence.
  • Take on product development leadership based on observed opportunities and assignments from senior underwriting leadership. Included in this are product development, reference material development and system integrations.
  • Executes special departmental projects to support strategic objectives.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree from an accredited institution, or equivalent
  • 7+ years of experience in California workers’ compensation underwriting, or equivalent, small business preferred.
  • Prior leadership and/or supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced, decision-oriented environment.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and analytical skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong automation skills including MS Office products and AI tools
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.

The company offers a competitive compensation plan and robust benefits package for full time regular employees which for this role include:
• Base Salary Range: $96,000 - 155,000 annually
• Benefits: Health, Dental, Vision, Life, Disability, Wellness, Paid Time Off, 401(k) and Profit-Sharing plans.

The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
