Responsibilities

Nautilus Insurance Group is seeking an AVP, Light Brokerage to lead a growing team and product segment.  This role can be located in our Scottsdale AZ headquarters or remotely for a highly qualified candidate.

 

The AVP of Light Brokerage is responsible for developing and communicating a strategic vision for Nautilus’ Light Brokerage product, grounded in a strong understanding of company goals and market dynamics. This role collaborates across departments to align production and profitability targets with broader corporate objectives. The AVP is also tasked with building and leading a high-performing team to execute the strategy effectively, ensuring sustainable premium growth and sound underwriting results.

 

Business Strategy and Staff Development:

  • Works with UW Leadership to create and manage strategy and plan to profitably grow and expand newly established division with focus on meeting customer needs along with business goals.
  • Responsible for overseeing expense management, including monitoring profitability and loss, ensuring the division achieves and maintains an acceptable level of profitability.
  • Provides the staff with the necessary metrics, reports, and data to identify overall results, analyze key performance indicators needed to achieve goals, identify gaps in results, and find opportunities or areas needing correction.
  • Monitor the composition, performance, and business mix of the Light Brokerage portfolio to achieve underwriting profitability goals. Take corrective actions through coordination with Product Development or other divisions to drive production and align with business mix objectives. Provide business forecasting related to trends and profitability within assigned territory.
  • Analyzes market conditions and provides suggestions for needed changes in forms, endorsements, and rates including opportunities for market or product expansion or enhancement.
  • Works closely with Contract Bind Underwriting Leadership to ensure alignment and cooperation between teams, fostering a unified approach to executing the shared strategy to achieve a seamless agent experience and consistent progress towards organizational goals.
  • Oversee team performance and implement strategies to enhance staff expertise. Develop and maintain team infrastructure to meet service level expectations, including creating a proactive hiring timeline to address future needs.
  • Assists the staff in underwriting and pricing out of authority or difficult risks on a referral basis ensuring they understand the rationale behind each decision and can effectively communicate the “why” to others including the submitting agent
  • Establishes policies and procedures related to underwriting and administration to ensure the efficient operation of the Light Brokerage division including regular staff audits as required by company guidelines
  • Carries out management responsibilities with the team in accordance with the Company policies, goals and applicable laws. Responsibilities include hiring, training, directing work, engaging, appraising, rewarding, and managing performance.

 

Distribution Management:

  • Builds and strengthens agency relationships through effective communication with key producers within the agencies to support strategic goals and enhance collaboration in determining feasibility and marketability of new products to succeed in the competitive marketplace
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to manage the marketing plan necessary to grow the book in targeted territories and classes with desired agents
  • Assesses agent performance based on profitability, growth, quality of submissions, bind ratios, and other key performance indicators in alignment with overall strategic goals. Collaborates with Partner Management to ensure a robust pipeline of potential agency appoints to ensure the right partners are selected to achieve our overall goals.   
  • Reviews and approves documents or directives needed to implement changes including distribution and notification to internal and external customers. Facilitates the development of marketing and communication plans to align change communication with the overall strategic production and profitability goals of the division.
  • Conducts regular virtual and in-person visits with appointed general agents to better understand the business needs, market conditions, and new business opportunities within the Light Brokerage space.

 

Product Oversight:

  • Oversee the development of new products in coordination with the Product Development team to build new opportunities for product expansion to drive more profitable business to the portfolio
  • Reviews industry publications and monitors pending legislation and regulations to determine impact of new developments on company insurance products.
  • Collaborates with Contract Bind Underwriting Leadership, Legal, Product Development and IT teams to regularly review product offering.
  • Proficient at creating manuscript policy language with the help of Forms and Legal teams.
  • Reviews and monitors progress of projects to ensure completion by assigned deadlines.
  • Manages distribution of product to appropriate agents and producers. Collaborates and recommends changes needed to drive growth for classes and territory desired.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or 7+ years insurance experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CPCU, IIA or other insurance related classes preferred.
  • Excess and Surplus lines background is highly preferred.
  • 7+ years’ experience underwriting casualty products.
  • Expertise in leading a high-performing underwriting team.
  • Proven ability to manage and grow broker/agent relationships across multiple regions or states.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Strong understanding of the E&S Light Brokerage business environment.
  • The ability to effectively collaborate cross-functionally with leaders across the organization.
  • Applicable knowledge of budgets, forecasting, and metrics.
  • Good decision-making skills and response to high-pressure situations.
  • Intermediate to Advanced experience in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and aptitude to learn new applications, as needed.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to travel, including overnight stays, to visit agents and attend conventions as necessary.
