This role will be based in our Meridian, ID office or remotely within one of our footprint states (ID, OR, MT, UT, WA).  We offer a hybrid work schedule with 4 days in the office; and 1 day remote where it makes sense to do so.

Responsibilities

As an Underwriting Manager, you will lead a core underwriting team and provide oversight and direction to ensure production goals are met, underwriting guidelines are adhered to, and profit and loss goals are achieved.  We'll trust you to coach and mentor the team in underwriting theory, sales acumen, and retail agency management with a goal of seeking out and securing opportunities to quote and bind profitable business.

We'll count on you for:


People Leadership:

  • Lead and coach the underwriting team through an advanced understanding of underwriting guidelines, product filings, and state regulations.
  • Determine and lead the delivery of training and development based on individual and unit needs, coaching, developing, and providing feedback to associates.

Team Building:

  • Act as a referral point for underwriters on more complex risks, leading associates through adequate pricing and appropriate terms on a risk-by-risk basis.
  • Provide support to the assigned team to ensure accurate and timely servicing of accounts.
  • Collaborate across silos with a desire to creatively solve problems, making BNP a stronger company.

Managing Change:

  • Participate in projects and initiatives as assigned by leadership.
  • Encourage and lead innovation initiatives to drive improvements in product, production, and process.

Driving Productivity:

  • Be responsible for all production and underwriting (profit/loss) results for the core underwriting team.
  • Conduct performance management duties, including KPI analytics.
  • Review claims activity, loss control surveys, and inspection reports for compliance with existing policies, handling exceptions as required and recommending improvements.

Business Acumen:

  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of the admitted, retail property and casualty space.
  • Underwrite risks for property and casualty lines of business across multiple industries including construction, manufacturing, distribution, retail, and service, according to BNP’s underwriting principles and within authority limits.
  • Partner with the Sales and Distribution team to develop, implement, and execute a state, territory, and region-level strategy.
  • Assist the underwriting team with the development and execution of sound action plans to drive business from key agents, in partnership with the Sales and Distribution team.
  • Monitor, track, and analyze the effectiveness of agency partnerships to support course corrections and decision-making.

Qualifications

What you need to have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college or university
  • 5+ years of commercial underwriting experience in the industry
  • Advanced knowledge of insurance principles, rates, rules, forms, procedures, regulations, coverages and business processes
  • Ability to analyze complex administrative or business problems, evaluate alternatives, and make appropriate recommendations
  • Strong business and financial acumen
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and build effective relationships 
  • Ability to effectively influence internal and external stakeholders

  • Established retail agent relationships in the Northwest and Utah highly desirable
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
