Responsibilities

Berkley Offshore Underwriters is seeking a Marine Claims Examiner.  This is an entry level role located in our office in midtown Manhattan, NYC.

 

The Marine Claims Examiner will proactively investigate, evaluate, negotiate and settle marine claims involving complex issues under moderate supervision. This includes the investigation, determination and evaluation of coverage, liability and damages as well as setting proper reserves. The adjuster will interact with various parties involved in the claims process (insured’s, brokers, surveyors and attorneys) and handle claims consistent with our "best practices". Lines of business include brown water hull & machinery, protection & indemnity, marine general liability, terminal operator’s legal liability, wharfingers liability, builders’ risk, pilot’s liability, marine license insurance, ocean cargo and marine artisans.

  • Input and maintain accurate claims records for designated accounts, within applicable Berkley Offshore claims administration systems.
  • Manage timely production of management information reports as required
  • Investigate high exposure claims that involve complex issues and/or litigation and may require qualified legal analysis.
  • Evaluate and address coverage issues and determine appropriate reserving levels.
  • Select and direct independent external service providers (e.g. Surveyors, Counsel, etc.) to achieve economical results and to provide a high quality service to all internal and external customers
  • Negotiate and resolve complex marine claims ensuring cost effective, service oriented solutions
  • Ensure claims handled within authority limits, and in line with Berkley Offshore Underwriting Managers claims standards, procedures and guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients.

Qualifications

  • This is an entry level position. Insurance experience a plus but not required.
  • Bachelor's degree (business discipline preferred but not required)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong presentation skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. 
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Minimal travel may be required.

The company offers a competitive compensation plan and robust benefits package for full time regular employees including:
• Base Salary Range: $65,000-$80,000
• Benefits include: Health, dental, vision, dental, life, disability, wellness, paid time off, 401(k) and profit-sharing plans.

The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
