Responsibilities

The Associate Underwriter will support the underwriting department by handling limited exposure accounts and completing underwriting functions based on underwriting guidelines and Letter of Authority.  This role provides functional support to underwriters, including systems support, and offers operational assistance as needed to ensure efficiency within the underwriting team. It is designed to help the individual learn and grow within the underwriting field.

  • Review new submission materials, assess risk and determine appropriate terms.
  • Process assigned automatic and non-automatic renewals within delegated authority.
  • Follow specific instructions of the underwriter.
  • Review applications from agents and obtain missing information.
  • Refer to the underwriter or underwriting manager when outside delegated authority.
  • Prepare proposals for agents.
  • Order inspections as needed for underwriting of risk, per guidelines or instructions.
  • Maintain records and prepare required reports as necessary.
  • Meet and/or communicate with agents as needed.
  • Maintain contact with and act as liaison between agents and internal teams in administering accounts where necessary.
  • Maintain and update files for underwriting reviews.
  • Research and resolve criticisms.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely rating, booking, and issuance of new business, endorsement, cancellation and renewal transactions.
  • Set up quote requests, endorsement requests and issuance by Operations team.
  • Handle endorsement requests within delegated authority.

Additional Duties

  • Order loss control
  • Order and review MVR’s, Opterix, BUR or other outside materials as instructed.
  • Handle routine inquiries from agents.
  • Provide guidance and training to entry-level assistants.
  • Identify and suggest improvements to underwriting processes and workflows.

May perform other functions as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • 2+ years commercial insurance underwriting assistant experience
  • Multi-line rating experience
  • Knowledge of commercial coverages, endorsements, rules and regulations
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, decision making and analytical skills required
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent verbal and written skills

 

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent

• Base Salary Range: $44k - $88k
