Responsibilities

We have an opportunity for an Insurance Counsel to join our Berkley One team! In this role, you will report directly to the Berkley One General Counsel and provide support in all Legal, Compliance, and regulatory matters.

 

This position will be based in our Morristown, NJ office - 4 days in the office, 1 day remote

Key functions include but are not limited to:

  • Administer the process for implementing changes in state law as they relate to products, pricing and other insurance-specific processes
  • Perform the legal work necessary to stand up new states/geographies
  • Manage the Manuscript Endorsement process for filing and tracking
  • Handle/Oversee Consumer Complaints
  • Manage processes for customer-impacting issues including Credit-related adverse action inquiries, Privacy Risk Incidents and Recoveries
  • Manage the Agency Termination process
  • Manage the state filings function (and the Compliance Specialist/State Filer) to ensure timely and accurate filings and the development/maintenance of relationships with our state insurance regulators
  • Manage the internal process for such regulatory functions as Cancellations and Non-Renewals and sanctions screening
  • Liaise with Berkley One and Corporate groups to ensure consistency across the organization as to legal approach, communication with state insurance regulators and management of W. R. Berkley Corporation insurance company regulatory matters
  • Perform Ad-hoc insurance or related research when requested by internal stakeholders
  • Other projects, initiatives, and work as assigned         

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelors’ degree or equivalent industry experience required
  • 5+ years’ significant experience in insurance litigation, claims litigation, coverage disputes or insurance defense work; or in-house at an insurance carrier; or as a compliance professional in the insurance industry
  • Licensed attorney in at least one state
  • Proficiency with System for Electronic Rate and Form Filing (SERFF) preferred, but not required
  • High Net Worth personal lines insurance experience preferred, but not required
  • Empathy and understanding of the needs of our customers, both insureds and their agents; an excellent, pro-active advocate for Berkley One
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills with a communication style that is flexible to the situation; able to communicate clearly and with purpose
  • Thrives under pressure, with exceptional organizational skills, integrity, and follow-through on tasks; works collaboratively with colleagues at all levels of the organization
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills with great attention to detail
  • Demonstrated and proven project management leadership skills including critical ability to coordinate and balance multiple projects in a time-sensitive environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
