Responsibilities

A Data Architect at Berkley Technology Services is a visionary who designs and implements cutting-edge solutions that drive business operations, analytics, and data engineering forward. They are the crucial link between business and technical teams, translating business needs into actionable technical strategies and ensuring transparency for informed decision-making. By collaborating with other architects, they create comprehensive solutions that propel the entire organization.

In this role, you'll set the standards and best practices that shape our data landscape. You'll evaluate top-tier data-centric vendors and products, staying ahead of industry trends and continuously innovating with new patterns and automation.

 

As a key member of the WRBC Architecture Community, you'll consult on high-impact projects, contribute to the development of standards and best practices, and mentor the next generation of data experts. Your work will drive continuous improvement and ensure WRBC remains at the forefront of data architecture.

Key functions include but are not limited to:

 

Technical Strategy

  • Contribute to strategic planning with recommendations on key initiatives and roadmaps.
  • Provide feedback on 3-5-year data architecture strategy, including technology investments.
  • Develop and maintain a business and technical capability model.
  • Build target and reference architectures for WRB’s multi-year strategy.
  • Stay informed on industry trends and technologies.
  • Create supporting architecture documentation consistently.

Consulting / Guidance

  • Understand BTS and OU/segment data strategies to provide aligned recommendations.
  • Offer consulting and guidance to development and infrastructure teams.
  • Present recommendations clearly to various audiences, emphasizing capability development.

Leadership

  • Build relationships with business partners and technical groups on data strategy.
  • Lead data architecture projects and manage change effectively.
  • Inspire engagement with WRB’s data and technical strategies.

Patterns and Standards Development

  • Identify and address gaps in data development patterns and standards.
  • Research, develop, and promote data design patterns and standards.
  • Evaluate data technologies and tools, including proof-of-concept analysis.
  • Contribute to and socialize a catalog of design patterns and standards.

Governance

  • Participate in the architecture review process.
  • Rationalize technology and tool recommendations.
  • Advocate for patterns and standards, especially in Infrastructure, Data, and Security.

Community of Practice

  • Engage in the architecture community through forums, standards development, and documentation.
  • Build relationships with business and technical teams and mentor less experienced developers.

Qualifications

Required

  • 8+ years progressive engineering experience developing/engineering solutions and leading multiple large-scale data-domain or cross-domain engineering initiatives.
  • 6+ years hands-on experience in multiple (minimum of three) data domains (data engineering, database administration, business intelligence, data science/AI, data modeling, big data, data security, data quality) leading architecture/development initiatives.
  • 2+ years hands-on experience working in large-scale data warehouse/data lake/data lakehouse environments based on the Teradata, Microsoft, Oracle, or IBM platforms or 2+ years working with structured and unstructured data within a cloud-based data environment (Redshift, Data Bricks, Hadoop, Snowflake, Spark, etc.).
  • 2+ years hands-on experience working on public cloud platforms and architectures (Azure, AWS, GCP).
  • 2+ years hands-on experience with virtualization and hyper-convergence approaches (VMWare, Nutanix, etc.)
  • 2+ years hands-on experience with multiple scripting languages (Python, JavaScript, PowerShell, Bash, Go, Ruby, etc.).
  • 2+ years hands-on experience with enterprise-scale data integration tools (Informatica, SSIS, Talend, Kafka, etc.).
  • 2+ years hands-on experience with business intelligence and/or data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, etc.)
  • 2+ years working with third party data services.
  • Ability to thrive and produce results with little or no supervision in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Ability to independently come up with solutions that effectively address business and IT issues through technical analysis, troubleshooting, research, evaluation, and communication.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to interact seamlessly at all levels with both technical and business stakeholders.
  • Strong customer service focus and sense of urgency.
  • Ability to quickly adapt and learn modern technologies and systems
  • Superior problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to create an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration.
  • Ability to look at the “big picture” and see opportunities for improvement.
  • Ability to break opportunities for improvement down into bite-sized chunks that can be pursued on a project-by-project basis.

Preferred

  • 4+ years working with data solutions that enable analytics and predictive modeling.
  • 3+ years using Agile development methodologies.
  • 2+ years as a Data Architect.
  • Practical experience with AI.
  • Certified in Azure or AWS Cloud architecture.
  • Work history in the financial services or insurance industries.
