Responsibilities

Nautilus Insurance Group is seeking a Vice President, Claims, to be located in their Scottsdale, AZ office.

 

The Vice President, Claims, is an officer of the Company responsible for (1) the implementation of Company strategies, goals and philosophy specifically within the Claims Department and (2) contribution to the Company’s total profitability through the management of the Department’s financial results and the continued development of its leadership team. Demonstration of strong leadership qualities and global thinking is essential.

  • Provides leadership and mentoring to the Department’s management team.
  • Manages and guides the performance and professional development of all Claims Managers and Supervisors, including performance evaluations and salary reviews.
  • Directs and oversees the Department’s recruiting and hiring efforts.
  • Coordinates the development and implementation of all Department training initiatives, including the Claims Intern Program and staff continuing education through various internal and external resources.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains best practices and appropriate file review and auditing procedures to ensure quality standards, processes and results.
  • Facilitates and promotes consistent, positive Department financial results by actively strategizing with and providing appropriate guidance and authority to Department personnel involved in handling claim files.  Requires extensive technical knowledge and experience, including an understanding of coverage and contract law, investigation, legal liability, litigation and reserving.
  • Assists the Department’s senior officer with managing the Department’s expenditures through proper staffing, budgeting, vendor control and file handling practices.
  • Directs and controls the Department’s Litigation Management efforts, including retention and auditing of approved panel counsel and coordination of services provided by in-house counsel.
  • Communicates and maintains through appropriate monitoring and auditing processes (e.g., quality reviews) consistent compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley and various other regulatory agency guidelines and internal controls. 
  • Directs the Department’s recovery (subrogation) initiatives.
  • Reviews and approves Large Loss Reports.
  • Facilitates the improvement of all systems applications utilized in the Department, for successful and efficient claims handling and management processes.
  • Utilizes existing technology resources and reports to efficiently measure and monitor financial and performance trends.  This includes the continued development and enhancement of appropriate management reports and metrics.
  • Assists the Senior Officer in the development of departmental strategies to improve business results.
  • Occasional responsibility for handling claims that are very complex and/or involve sensitive or confidential information.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; coaching, rewarding and disciplining employees; salary administration; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

  • BS/BA degree required.  MBA and/or CPCU preferred. 
  • 15+ years of commercial property and casualty insurance claim experience; E&S experience a plus.
  • 10+ years of management experience with employees both in-person and remote
  • Possess a working knowledge of all functional aspects of insurance company and third-party administrator (i.e. claims, underwriting, marketing, loss control, etc.)
  • Knowledge of policy issuance, endorsement and premium audit matters.
  • Technical proficiency in all aspects of commercial claim handling
  • Excellent analytical, innovation and creativity skills
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to give constructive feedback
  • Track record of staff and leadership development within a claims function
  • Ability to problem solve and make decisions
  • Knowledge of state/territory regulations and issues
