Responsibilities

The Unix Systems Engineer is responsible for the deployment and support of UNIX Server based operating systems.  Regular job responsibilities will involve making design decisions, developing team standards and documentation that is based on the goals of project initiatives and/or changing business needs.  The Unix Systems Engineer will be responsible for: supporting a variety of UNIX technologies including AIX and Linux, completion of customer and team driven projects, and resolving incidents, requests and tasks routed through Service Now. This includes participating in a 24/7 On Call rotation for Priority Level 3 and higher service calls. Key functions include but are not limited to:

 

• Understanding daily administration of Linux servers, AIX, and SAN based mass storage assignment.
• Able to configure, integrate, maintain, debug performance issues, analyze recovery, and address user issues on standard Unix Platforms.
• Highly Knowledgeable around ESX VCenter Tasks including; Deployments, Cloning, Migrations, and API Calls.
• Provide Scripting support and scripting abilities within Perl, Python and Standard Shell commands.
• Provide support and administration of IBM Power 8 and 9 Series Servers.
• Understand IBM Virtualization layer including HMC’s and IBM Power Series Frame deployments.
• Ability to troubleshoot and provide Performance Analysis and Capacity Planning for Linux and AIX environments.
• Anticipate, mitigate, identify, troubleshoot, report, and resolve hardware, software, and firmware problems on servers.
• Ensure the integrity, security, and availability of all UNIX-based enterprise servers,
• Conduct research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards in support of systems software procurement and development efforts.
• Responsible for working with the team on daily operational issues by working directly on incidents reported through the Service Desk system.
• Assist team members with complex tasks such as; maintain system scripts, security, tuning, configuration and monitoring
• Maintain and constantly improve server performance, reliability, and security in compliance with BTS Standards and Policies
• Support the deployment of new systems in response to incoming customer requests and organizational requirements.
• Support the engineering team by participating in new system deployments, technical exchange meetings and document reviews.
• Operating system/utility software installation, testing, implementation, maintenance, and configuration management.

Qualifications

Please note this position is a hybrid role with expectations to be in-office at one of our technology hubs (Urbandale IA or Wilmington DE) four days a week. This is not a remote role.

 

• Bachelor’s degree or combination of education/experience/certification

• 5 + years reasonable UNIX platforms/vendor experience
• Linux Server Technology support for a minimum of 5 years
• Working knowledge of High Availability and Load balancing technologies
