The VP/SVP, Specialty Casualty Segment Executive is responsible for all aspects of underwriting leadership in the national Specialty Casualty underwriting segment.  This is a senior leadership role and will report to Vela’s Chief Underwriting Officer.  Responsibilities include:

• Overall management responsibility for a large business segment.
• Leading underwriters and regional leaders in driving the success of the business.
• Achieving premium, rate, and profitability goals.
• Continually refining and updating Underwriting Guidelines.
• Preparing strategic budgeting and business plans.
• Managing the diversity of risks held within the portfolio.
• Driving and managing the underwriting and profitability metrics.
• Managing expense budgets.
• Create a culture of innovation and change.
• Managing underwriters’ letters of authority.
• Training, coaching, and developing team members.
• Participating in the sourcing, interviewing, and hiring of new team members.
• Managing policy forms and product offerings.                                                               
• Partnering with cross functional teams.
• Managing broker partnerships.
• Applying analytics to distribution management.
• Regular and predictable attendance.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Four (4) year College Degree, or commensurate experience and training.
• Industry designations preferred: CPCU, ASLI, ARM.
• Minimum of 15+ years’ commercial lines underwriting experience.
• Experience in managing a team.
• Experience in and understanding of the E&S competitive marketplace.
• Demonstrated technical expertise and product knowledge in Manufacturing & Products.
• A drive to be creative and innovative in advancing the success of the segment.
